Nvidia Builds Open-Source AI Empire with Hugging Face
Nvidia's strategy in the AI space is becoming clearer, and it involves deep integration with Hugging Face. The company has released over 650 open-source models on the platform, making it one of the top contributors. This move goes beyond a potential $12.9 billion acquisition, which has been rumored but not confirmed.
Nvidia's aim is to control the flow of open-source AI models through discovery, deployment, and distribution. According to Counterpoint Research, the company is building a three-layer stack on top of Hugging Face: a discovery layer where developers find open models, a deployment layer where those models get packaged into production-ready services, and a distribution layer where they reach customers across multiple clouds at once.
Nvidia's Nemotron models are a key part of this strategy. The company has released them as open-weight models with published training recipes, making it possible for developers to fine-tune them on local infrastructure through European Nvidia Cloud Partners. This integration also supports access to over 100,000 public, private, and domain-specialized LLMs hosted on Hugging Face.
