Nvidia CEO Says Basic Math Skills 'Don't Matter' in Age of AI

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang sparked controversy when he appeared on the Ezra Klein Show and stated that basic math skills 'don't matter' in the AI era. The discussion centered around a Chinese study on AI's impact on student performance, which found that students who used AI consistently showed declines in cognitive skills.

The study examined 26,000 students who began using AI at staggered intervals, allowing researchers to directly compare the effects of AI adoption. While AI enabled students to complete work faster, it also led to a deterioration in their ability to perform tasks like long division and multiplication tables.

Huang agreed that student cognition is getting worse and stated that 'basic math is being forgotten.' He went on to say that he didn't think this was a concern, as people will discover new skills. The CEO even admitted that he lacks basic life skills himself, such as knowing his address or phone number.
