Nvidia CEO Warns AI Labs: Shut Down If You Can't Contain Experiments
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has expressed concerns about AI labs that cannot contain their own experiments. He stated that such labs should be shut down due to the potential risks they pose to humanity.
In an interview with Ezra Klein, Huang emphasized that the cost to humanity from these labs is too great, and that the liability could be both civil and criminal.
Huang's views on AI safety are notable, given that Nvidia has benefited financially from the development of powerful graphics processing units (GPUs) used in large-scale AI models. He dismissed warnings about AI as 'irresponsible' but proposed a remedy for labs that cannot contain their experiments: shutting them down.
Huang contrasted Nvidia's verification-heavy chip design with those of other labs that prioritize capability over safety. He urged companies to not ship products if they are not ready, citing the example of OpenAI pausing reinforcement learning on its newest models after a breach at Hugging Face.
