Nvidia Chip Sale to ByteDance and Alibaba Gets Green Light in China
China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has signaled that it may approve Nvidia's RTX Pro 5500 chip sale to ByteDance and Alibaba. The chip is a workstation-class GPU, not a data-center accelerator, which puts it in a different regulatory bucket.
The MIIT asked the two companies to submit their plans for purchasing the chips, including the number of units they intend to buy and the specific use cases for them. This procedural signal suggests that Beijing intends to approve the purchases once this information is submitted.
However, no binding purchase orders have been confirmed, and no shipment dates or dollar values have been verified by a primary outlet. The report comes after two years of on-again, off-again restrictions on Nvidia chips reaching Chinese buyers.
