Nvidia Confronted Over AI Data Center Impact on Indian Communities
An Indian student confronted Nvidia's head of sustainability Josh Parker during a Climate Week NYC panel on September 23. The protest targeted the environmental impact of artificial intelligence infrastructure, particularly data centers.
The student claimed that his family in India was affected by drought due to the company's operations and alleged that Nvidia emitted 15 million tonnes of carbon dioxide. Parker acknowledged concerns surrounding data centers and said technology companies need to be proactive and transparent about their environmental impact.
Nvidia has been working to reduce its environmental footprint, including purchasing clean electricity to match its global energy use in fiscal 2026. The company is also developing lower-impact infrastructure for AI computing systems.
