Nvidia Ditches Water for AI Servers with Closed-Loop Cooling
Nvidia has announced its newest AI servers will use closed-loop liquid cooling, eliminating the need for water-dependent air-cooling fans and significantly reducing energy consumption.
The company's director of data center cooling and infrastructure, Ali Heydari, stated that this new system eliminates 'massive amounts of energy consumption' and 'pretty much all water usage.'
Nvidia's solution reuses a coolant made of water and propylene glycol in a closed loop, allowing it to operate at temperatures up to 45 degrees Celsius.
This technology comes at a critical moment, as the United Nations predicts AI-related water consumption could equal the annual needs of 1.3 billion people by the end of the decade.
Nvidia is not alone in seeking alternative cooling solutions, with Microsoft announcing its new data centers will stop using water for cooling and save over 125 million liters per year.
