Nvidia Earnings, Inflation Data Keep Stocks in Neutral Territory
The stock market showed little change on Wednesday following the release of inflation data and ahead of key announcements from Nvidia and Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh at the Jackson Hole summit.
The S&P 500 index edged down by 0.02%, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite fell 0.08%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average underperformed, dropping 0.21%.
Data from the Department of Commerce revealed that the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge rose 0.2% in July, aligning with analysts' forecasts. The core personal consumption expenditures price index gained 0.2% last month and stood at 3.3% for the year.
The report also showed that personal income increased by 0.4% and spending rose by 0.2%, both exceeding previous expectations. This led to a slight increase in expectations of an interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve, but it then dropped to 36.1%. The central bank had kept rates unchanged in its July meeting, with three officials voting for a hike.
Some participants at the Federal Open Market Committee expressed concerns that policy tightening would be necessary if inflation did not decrease over the next months. Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari stated that action is needed now, suggesting a 'potential series of small policy moves' rather than waiting and implementing bolder actions later.
