Nvidia Employees Cash Out as Stock Boom Turns Retention Benefits into Exit Strategy
Nvidia employees are cashing out as the company's stock boom turns its retention benefits into a ticket out the door. For some, the golden handcuffs of Nvidia's AI-driven success have become too comfortable.
Ken Janik, a former Nvidia employee who worked on chip design and AI models for biology, left the company in August to launch his own AI research outfit. He said he waited until after an especially valuable stock vest in June before leaving, as he didn't need the money anymore.
Janik's experience is not unique. According to data from Levels.fyi, a compensation-sharing site, Nvidia employees with larger initial grants for new hires have seen their median worth increase by about $4.1 million since 2022. This has created a natural exit point for some employees who are weighing retirement.
Nvidia's rapid ascent can flip the effect of retention benefits, making some employees wealthy enough to leave. The company's sales vice president Scott Baker retired in July after a 26-year tenure at Nvidia, citing financial freedom and personal passions as reasons for his departure.
