Nvidia and Google Join Forces to Tackle AI's Power Bottleneck
The AI Energy Management Alliance (AEMA) has been launched by Nvidia, Google, and Emerald AI to address the growing power consumption of artificial intelligence data centers. The alliance aims to develop common standards for grid-responsive computing facilities that can dynamically adjust their electricity use in response to power-grid conditions.
A flexible data center could respond to grid conditions by shifting computing workloads, using stored energy, tapping paired generation, or reducing demand during system contingencies. This approach could make better use of existing grid capacity, reduce demand during periods of stress, and potentially avoid or delay infrastructure upgrades.
The alliance plans to establish common standards for response speed, reliability, performance measurement, and operational data sharing. It will also work with utilities on interconnection solutions and advocate for policies that recognize grid-responsive demand.
