Nvidia Investors Eye Q2 Earnings for Signs of AI Chip Dominance
Nvidia, the world's largest AI chip manufacturer, is set to report its second-quarter earnings on August 26.
The company's growth trajectory may be getting started, with Stanford University research suggesting that today's AI models already meet or exceed human baselines in various tasks. However, there is still a long way to go until these models control huge swaths of the economy.
Nvidia's Blackwell architecture has been in high demand since its announcement in early 2024, with sales quickly selling out and even reports of a backlog that could persist for 12 months or longer. The company's Vera Rubin architecture was teased in 2024 but only began sales earlier this year, and management recently confirmed that production is increasing.
Investors will be keeping a close eye on Nvidia's next earnings report to see whether Vera Rubin sales are competing with Blackwell sales, as well as potential backlog and production updates. Additionally, they will be monitoring management's comments on rising competition for GPU manufacturing from other companies planning to design their own AI chips in-house.
