Nvidia Nears 6 Trillion Market Valuation Amid Mixed Historical Milestone Outcomes
Nvidia is on the verge of making history as the first company to reach a $6 trillion market valuation. As of October 5, its shares closed at a record $238.90, valuing the AI chip giant at approximately $5.8 trillion. This milestone is just 4% away from the unprecedented $6 trillion mark, a level no company has ever achieved.
Historical data suggests that reaching such milestones does not necessarily predict a stock's future performance. For instance, Apple's stock returns after crossing $1 trillion, $2 trillion, and $3 trillion varied widely, ranging from a 31% loss to a 27% gain. These returns were often influenced more by earnings growth and valuation changes than the milestone itself.
Nvidia's own milestones have shown mixed results. After hitting $4 trillion on July 9, 2025, its shares rose about 25% in the following year. However, the business growth outpaced the stock, with revenue increasing 106% year over year to $96.2 billion in the fiscal second quarter of 2027. Earnings per share grew even faster, rising 120% to $2.22.
Looking ahead, Nvidia's earnings are expected to continue growing rapidly. Management projects revenue of around $108 billion for the fiscal third quarter, nearly 90% more than the previous year. Despite this impressive growth, investors are paying around 15 times expected earnings for fiscal 2028, which suggests a relatively low valuation for a company with such rapid earnings growth. However, a slowdown in AI spending could impact Nvidia's earnings and stock performance.
