Nvidia Nears $6 Trillion Milestone but History Shows Little Predictive Power
Nvidia's stock reached a new record high on October 5, closing at $238.90 and bringing its market capitalization to approximately $5.8 trillion. This figure is just 4% shy of the $6 trillion mark, a milestone no other company has achieved. Despite the excitement around such milestones, historical data suggests that hitting a new trillion-dollar level does not predict future stock performance.
Apple's experiences with similar milestones illustrate this point. After reaching $1 trillion in 2018, its stock fell about 2% over the next year. When it hit $2 trillion in 2020, the stock rose 27%, but this still lagged behind the S&P 500's 31% gain. The most dramatic drop came after Apple crossed $3 trillion in 2022, with its stock losing 31% over the following year.
Nvidia's own milestones have shown more positive outcomes. After hitting $4 trillion in July 2025, its stock rose around 25% in the subsequent year. Since crossing $5 trillion in October 2025, the stock has gained about 15%. However, the company's earnings growth has outpaced its stock performance, with revenue rising 106% year over year in the fiscal second quarter of 2027 and adjusted earnings per share climbing 120%.
The key factor influencing Nvidia's stock from here will likely be its earnings growth relative to its valuation multiple. Management expects revenue of around $108 billion in the fiscal third quarter, representing nearly 90% year-over-year growth. Investors are currently paying about 15 times expected earnings for fiscal 2028, which analysts consider relatively low given the company's rapid earnings growth.
