Nvidia Overclocked GPUs: A Pricey but Modest Boost

When buying an Nvidia graphics card, buyers often face a decision between standard and overclocked models. The latter boasts a factory-boosted clock speed, but is it worth the extra cost? Many gamers and PC builders agree that overclocking doesn't justify the added expense.

A free app called MSI Afterburner allows users to overclock or undervolt their graphics cards themselves, achieving better performance at no additional cost. In most cases, an overclocked GPU might offer only a slight improvement in frames per second, but may also run hotter and consume more power.

The extra heat is often mitigated by larger coolers, which manufacturers add to OC versions. However, this approach can be seen as a marketing tool, allowing companies to boost their profit margins by selling higher-priced variants of the same cards.

Recent tests by Linus Tech Tips compared regular and overclocked Nvidia cards, revealing only marginal improvements in performance, 2-4 frames per second more than standard models. In some cases, newer Nvidia cards with DLSS technology can provide smoother gameplay without the need for overclocking.
