Nvidia Pledges Billions in Financing for OpenAI Data Center
Nvidia has agreed to provide as much as $105 billion in financing guarantees for OpenAI's massive data center campus in Ohio. The project, which will deliver 8 gigawatts of compute power, is expected to be a major revenue driver for Nvidia, with the company anticipating around $200 billion in chip sales from just the first phase.
The deal also includes an investment of $1.5 billion by Nvidia into SB Energy, the SoftBank unit developing the site. In return, OpenAI has committed to exclusively using Nvidia chips at the site.
The project is massive and expensive, with each gigawatt costing around $50-60 billion. However, it's unclear how OpenAI will pay for its commitments, which total over $750 billion through 2030. If OpenAI defaults on its payments, Nvidia would be on the hook to cover the costs.
Nvidia has a significant stake in the success of OpenAI, with most of its top customers relying directly or indirectly on the company. The risk of OpenAI defaulting on its payments is a major concern for investors and could have serious consequences for Nvidia's stock price.
