Nvidia has released its first open-source AI model, Nemotron 3.5 Lightning, which the company claims is lightweight and runs on a single GPU inside a PC or laptop.

The move is part of Nvidia's strategy to make free AI models available to developers, while still driving sales of its graphics processing units (GPUs).

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has argued that open-source AI should be great for hardware and chip sales, as companies will need to purchase GPUs to run these models.

The release comes amid a debate in Washington over the use of open-source AI, with some policymakers raising concerns about national security and intellectual property theft.
