Nvidia Secures Ohio Data Centre Land with $105bn Guarantee
Nvidia has secured land and power for its massive data centre project in Ohio, which will be built by SB Energy. The campus will span private and federal land and will have at least 10 gigawatts of new generation capacity, including 9.2 gigawatts of natural gas. Nvidia's $105bn guarantee covers the value of completed data centres, not OpenAI itself.
The deal includes a 20-year lease for OpenAI, which will be the exclusive customer for the first half of the site. Nvidia has an option to extend its commitment to the full campus later. The company can earn hundreds of billions of dollars in chip sales from the project and also takes an equity stake in SB Energy.
OpenAI has promised annual public reports on hiring, water use, and energy consumption. The project will create 35,000 construction jobs over six years and 2,500 long-term operating roles. Nvidia's guarantee expires if OpenAI earns a satisfactory credit rating or ends its lease on its own terms.
