Nvidia Sets Record with $235 Billion Stock Buyback Plan
Nvidia, the chipmaker and tech giant, has announced an increase in its stock buyback program to $150 billion, making it the largest ever in US corporate history. The move is part of Nvidia's strategy to return capital to shareholders as profits continue to surge due to massive spending on artificial intelligence data centers.
Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang said his company's growth is being driven by a 'once-in-a-generation platform shift' to AI and accelerated computing, which has led to record profits. In the second quarter of 2026, Nvidia's profits more than doubled compared to the previous year, reaching nearly $60 billion.
Critics argue that corporate spending on share repurchases amounts to stock price manipulation that diverts resources from more productive uses of capital, such as increasing worker pay and research and development. According to David Kass, executive director of Americans for Tax Fairness, 'stock buybacks widen economic inequality by making already wealthy shareholders even richer.'
