Nvidia Sets Sights on Hugging Face for $12.9 Billion AI Model Hub
Nvidia has agreed to acquire Hugging Face for $12.9 billion, according to reports from The Information and Bloomberg.
The deal would give Nvidia ownership of a platform that developers use to find and deploy open-source models, which are becoming increasingly popular in artificial intelligence applications.
However, the acquisition price is a subject of debate, with some analysts comparing it to Microsoft's $7.5 billion purchase of GitHub in 2018. While both deals buy the default location where developers keep their work, the analogy misses the risk that Nvidia faces in maintaining neutrality on the platform.
Nvidia's own tooling acknowledges the importance of Hugging Face in the ecosystem, with its NIM Operator supporting caching models from Hugging Face and calling Hugging Face tooling to retrieve them. This suggests that Nvidia recognizes the value of Hugging Face's open-source model repository, which has become a hub for developers exploring new AI applications.
