Nvidia Ships Co-Packaged Optics Switches as Industry Questions Widespread Adoption

Nvidia has begun shipping its co-packaged optics switches as part of its Spectrum-6 technology. The company's Senior Vice President of Networking, Gilad Shainer, confirmed this at the OCP APAC Summit in Taipei. However, a senior engineer from a major chip packaging house warned that the ecosystem required for widespread adoption is still lacking.

The industry has been waiting years to see co-packaged optics switches in production, and Nvidia's achievement marks an important milestone. But the question remains whether this is a signal that the technology is ready for procurement or if it represents a solution to a problem that one company, Nvidia, has solved but not the broader supply chain.

Shainer emphasized that networking is now the core of AI computing as AI factories scale, and the interconnect layer is the new binding limit. He noted that co-packaged optics eliminates digital signal processing retimers and cuts power consumption by up to five times compared to pluggable alternatives.
