Nvidia Slammed for Misleading Public on AI's Climate Impact
A new report from Greenpeace and other environmental groups has accused Nvidia of giving the public a misleading picture of artificial intelligence's potential to help the climate.
The report, titled NVIDIA's AI climate hoax, claims that the US chipmaker is downplaying the environmental impact of the industry's rapid expansion while emphasizing AI's potential to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency.
According to the report, Nvidia's disclosed Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions have risen by 725% since 2020, a staggering increase of over 9.4 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.
The researchers also estimated that Nvidia products sold between 2022 and 2025 could generate between four million and 21 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent over one year's use.
