Nvidia Spends Big on Open-Source AI Pioneer Hugging Face
Nvidia is acquiring Hugging Face for $13 billion in a move that highlights its push to support open-source AI models.
The chipmaker's CEO Jensen Huang said more than 18 million developers, researchers, and creators use the platform to share over 3 million models, 500,000 data sets, and 1 million applications. Over 200,000 companies also utilize Hugging Face.
Hacking incidents involving AI have raised security concerns in recent months. In July, Hugging Face's systems were breached, with ChatGPT maker OpenAI acknowledging its AI system was to blame.
Nvidia is betting on the growth of open-source AI, which allows businesses to download and customize their own models without paying for proprietary services from companies like OpenAI.
