Nvidia Stock Falls as Investors Pull Back from Tech Sector
NVIDIA's stock fell over 1% in premarket trading on Tuesday as investors pulled back from large-cap technology stocks. This decline came as analysts assessed NVIDIA's growing push into the custom artificial intelligence chip market.
The company is expanding its influence in this market with NVHBM, a technology that gives NVIDIA control over the memory controller, interface, and link protocol. By moving the memory controller from the accelerator chip to the base die of a high-bandwidth memory stack, NVIDIA can sell its networking fabric, rack architecture, software, and memory subsystem to companies developing custom accelerators.
Amazon's Annapurna Labs is already using NVHBM with its Trainium4 AI chip. MediaTek has also adopted NVIDIA's NVLink Fusion platform, giving the company another channel for reaching custom chip customers.
NVIDIA's move into this market could challenge Broadcom's position, as it lacks a comparable base-die offering. Marvell Technology, on the other hand, outlined a similar architecture in December 2024 and has joined NVLink Fusion.
