Nvidia Surpasses Apple as Largest S&P 500 Constituent, Magnificent Seven Dominate Index
Nvidia has surpassed Apple as the largest constituent in the S&P 500 index fund, according to data from August 21. The company commands a 7.55% weighting in Vanguard's VOO, while Apple holds a 7.05% share.
This shift is part of a larger trend known as the Magnificent Seven problem, where a handful of tech giants - including Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, and Broadcom - collectively account for roughly 32.7% of the S&P 500's value.
Passive investors buying into index funds are inadvertently making a heavily concentrated bet on these companies due to the market-cap weighted nature of the S&P 500.
Nvidia's ascent is driven by its position as an essential infrastructure provider for the artificial intelligence boom, while Apple has been growing more modestly in comparison.
