Nvidia Corp., known for its AI chips, is planning a significant expansion in Australia to meet growing demand for artificial intelligence models and applications.

The company, along with partners Firmus, CDC, NEXTDC, and AirTrunk, aims to build up to 2 gigawatts of AI computing capacity by 2027. This would surpass the country's current total computing capacity of around 1.6 GW, according to Data Centres Australia research.

The facilities will utilize Nvidia's DSX platform and support emerging applications such as autonomous agents. NEXTDC Ltd., an Australian data center operator, is poised to participate in this expansion.

However, the increased computing power also raises concerns about electricity grid pressure and water supply issues. As Australia attracts large data center investments, regulators and communities are increasingly scrutinizing their environmental footprint.
