Nvidia Tests Lower-Memory Rubin Ultra Amid Memory Shortage

Nvidia's upcoming Rubin Ultra accelerator is facing memory shortages that are forcing the company to test lower-memory configurations. According to The Information, Nvidia is testing versions of Rubin Ultra with as little as 192 GB of memory and using HBM4 instead of the originally announced HBM4E.

This move comes after reports circulated in June that Nvidia cancelled its quad-die Rubin Ultra design due to manufacturing complexities. Although Nvidia has yet to comment on this, it's possible that the company is moving ahead with a dual-GPU Rubin Ultra.

Nvidia's partnership with SK hynix to develop next-generation memory technology may also play a role in addressing the memory shortages. The two companies announced a $500 billion strategic relationship last month that includes a long-term memory supply agreement. However, it's unclear if this will be enough to meet demand.
