Nvidia Unveils $500 Billion Chip-Backed Security Plan for AI Build-Out
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has unveiled a plan to raise $500 billion in capital for the AI build-out by creating chip-backed securities. This move is reminiscent of mortgage-backed securities, which were introduced in 1970 as a way to finance housing projects.
The collateral for these new securities will be graphics processing units (GPUs) from Nvidia's data centers. According to Huang, this will allow key stakeholders in the AI ecosystem to tap into attractive rates and obtain the necessary funding for data centers and equipment.
Waldemar Szlezak, KKR's head of digital infrastructure, explained that these securities can be thought of as a revenue stream that can be securitized or divided among investors. Huang also mentioned that Nvidia may offer to guarantee a quarter of each loan on a case-by-case basis.
Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon noted that this is essentially asset-based financing against the infrastructure build-out, which has real value. However, some concerns have been raised about the potential risks involved in this plan.
