Ryanair Boeing 737 Engine Damage Blamed on Bird Strike
A Ryanair Boeing 737 NG suffered engine damage on July 10 after taking off from Greece, forcing an emergency landing. The incident occurred when a bird struck one of the engines, causing it to break apart and hit a passenger window.
The damaged window led to a loss of cabin pressure, partially sucking a passenger through the opening. Fortunately, no life-threatening injuries were reported.
According to the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), bird remains were found inside the engine after the incident. The agency is investigating possible bird strikes, which may have contributed to the engine failure.
The NTSB noted that the aircraft's No. 2 engine had been involved in four suspected bird strikes during the past year. While no damage was reported in two of those cases, subsequent maintenance inspections found no issues with the engine.
