Nvidia vs Broadcom: AI Chip Battle Heats Up
Nvidia and Broadcom are two major players in the AI computing market, but which one has the better bull case? Nvidia is the established giant, holding the largest market share by far with its broad-purpose computing units, known as GPUs. These GPUs can handle a wide variety of workloads and are incredibly powerful.
Broadcom, on the other hand, is taking a different approach to AI computing with its custom ASICs (application-specific integrated circuits). While GPUs have been used for nearly every computing application that requires a lot of computing power, including AI, Broadcom's custom chips are optimized for specific tasks and can outperform GPUs at a lower price point.
Nvidia generated $96.2 billion in revenue during the second quarter, with more than 90% coming from its data center division. The company expects to reach $108 billion in Q3, while Broadcom projects $115 billion in AI semiconductor revenue for fiscal year 2027, doubling to $230 billion in FY 2028.
While Nvidia's growth is slower than Broadcom's at around 70%, it still dwarfs the projected figures from Broadcom. However, Broadcom's custom chips are gaining ground, and the company has a track record of outperforming expectations.
