Nvidia's acquihire of Groq, an AI accelerator tech firm, has raised antitrust concerns with the US Department of Justice (DOJ) launching a probe into the $20 billion deal. The acquisition was made in December last year and included licensing Groq's technology and hiring key members of its engineering team.

Nvidia claims that the deal is a 'great American success story' that promotes innovation, rewards entrepreneurs, and benefits consumers. However, the DOJ may disagree, with some US senators arguing that deals engineered to avoid regulatory scrutiny should still be scrutinized.

The real question for the DOJ is whether the deal harmed competition, which could be difficult to prove given the competitive landscape. Even if the DOJ were successful in unwinding the deal, it's likely too late, as Nvidia has already laid the foundations for an ecosystem with its networking business at its center.
