Nvidia's 70% Growth Forecast Faces Reality Check
Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang sparked excitement and debate among investors after stating that his company could grow by 70% year over year, citing supply chain constraints as a major hurdle to overcome.
However, experts caution that this growth prediction should not be taken as a formal revenue forecast, but rather as a statement of confidence in Nvidia's ability to secure sufficient supply to meet demand. This distinction is crucial, given the company's market value of nearly $5.27 trillion and its strong second-quarter performance, which saw revenue soar 106% from the previous year.
Huang emphasized that Nvidia's growth strategy goes beyond selling processors alone, but also involves complete computing systems, networking, and software for data centers, as well as capital support to help specialist cloud operators secure land, power, and buildings. He also reaffirmed his estimate of $3 trillion to $4 trillion in global AI infrastructure spending by 2030.
While Nvidia's near-term outlook is strong, with a target revenue of $108 billion for the third quarter, investors should be cautious of the company's growing supply commitments, which have risen from $119 billion to $279 billion. This has led some analysts to question whether the growth story is becoming more capital-intensive than the valuation allows.
