Nvidia's AI Boom at Risk: A $3 Trillion Slump?
Nvidia's (NVDA) shares have skyrocketed 13,440% in the past decade, making it one of the most successful companies in recent history. The company is operating at full strength, with revenue growth of 85% year over year and net income surging 211% in its fiscal 2027 first quarter.
The key to Nvidia's success lies in its ability to capitalize on the AI spending boom. CFO Colette Kress highlighted the massive scale of this trend during the Q1 2027 earnings call, stating that hyperscale capex is expected to exceed $1 trillion in 2027 and AI infrastructure spending could reach $3 trillion to $4 trillion annually by the end of the decade.
However, this boom comes with a significant risk: what if it slows down? Federal Reserve Board economists estimate that over one-third of U.S. GDP growth in the first quarter was attributed to AI spending. If Kress' forecast holds true, the $3.5 trillion spent on AI infrastructure by 2030 will represent a higher share of the nation's GDP than any previous capex build-out in history.
Nvidia's success is tied to AI creating enormous value sooner rather than later. If enterprises fail to evolve from experimentation to outsize revenue growth or margin expansion, the company's financials could suffer. Hyperscalers may need to flatten or reduce their capital expenditures in the coming years, which would negatively impact Nvidia and other chip stocks.
The sustainability of AI spending is the biggest unknown for Nvidia. The endgame of AI is uncertain, but its success is predicated on it creating value quickly.
