Nvidia's AI-Capex Exposure Under Scrutiny as Hyperscaler Spending Slows
A slowdown in hyperscaler capital spending could hit semiconductors and infrastructure providers hardest, according to Macro Strategist Sam Rines at WisdomTree. This would put companies like Nvidia Corp (NASDAQ:NVDA) on one side of the cycle and Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ:META) on the other.
Nvidia has been a major beneficiary of the AI boom, supplying chips for massive infrastructure buildouts. However, investors are increasingly asking how long hyperscalers can continue spending at extraordinary levels before demanding clearer returns.
Rines notes that capex is tolerated when companies can show clear returns, but not appreciated otherwise. This distinction matters between companies building AI infrastructure and those using AI to improve existing businesses.
Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ:MSFT) is seeing its cloud business benefit from AI, while Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG)(NASDAQ:GOOGL) is starting to see Gemini contribute to revenue and improve YouTube advertising. Meta, meanwhile, is using AI to strengthen its core advertising business while expanding its AI product lineup.
If hyperscaler spending starts to slow, Rines expects the impact to be felt most by semiconductors and infrastructure providers, with companies like Nvidia potentially feeling it first. However, this does not mean a capex slowdown would automatically translate into a collapse in Nvidia's business.
