Nvidia's DLSS Name Becomes a Problem as Company Continues to Expand Technology
Nvidia's DLSS technology has become synonymous with upscaling in PC gaming, but it's been developed into so many different things that it's hard to keep track of what exactly DLSS refers to. The company's constant addition of new features and technologies has created a naming mess, where the term 'DLSS' is used to describe everything from traditional upscalers to completely different AI-powered image filters.
When Nvidia released its first DLSS technology in 2020, it was a major improvement over previous upscaling methods. But since then, the company has continued to update and expand on the tech, adding features like frame generation, ray reconstruction, and deep learning anti-aliasing (DLAA). Each of these new technologies has been given the DLSS name, which is causing confusion among gamers and developers alike.
Despite the naming issues, Nvidia's DLSS technology remains one of the best upscalers in PC gaming. The latest version, DLSS 4, uses a transformer-based model that requires significantly less VRAM than previous versions, making it accessible to more users. However, some critics have argued that Nvidia is prioritizing marketing over clarity and transparency.
