Nvidia's Quantum Research Center to Get Superion 256 Installation

IonQ's Superion 256 quantum computer is headed to Nvidia's Accelerated Quantum Research Center in 2027. The installation will make Superion 256 the first on-premises quantum processing unit at NVAQC, where it will connect directly to an Nvidia GB200 NVL72 through NVQLink.

The system uses Electronic Qubit Control, which replaces complex laser-based controls with electronics integrated onto the chip. IonQ has fabricated 256-qubit processors and trapped ions in prototype systems, but has not published full-system workload results for a delivered Superion 256.

IonQ plans to use Superion 256 for research including portfolio optimization and risk modeling, materials science, computational chemistry, and broader work on quantum-GPU software. The collaboration aims to test hybrid quantum-GPU computing, with no performance results yet available from the configuration.
