New York's top judges had trouble seeing how Meta Platforms Inc., Reddit, and Alphabet Inc.'s Google could be held liable for a 2022 mass shooting in Buffalo without exposing social media companies to broad liability.

The judges struggled on Tuesday with the idea of holding these companies accountable for the algorithms they use to push out tailored content.

The plaintiffs want to hold the companies responsible for disseminating harmful content, but the judges were skeptical about how this could be done without setting a precedent that would expose social media companies to broad liability.
