NYC Council Member Calls for Halt in Trash Bin Enforcement Amid Shortages and Theft

New York City Council member Simcha Felder is calling for a pause in enforcement of the city's mandatory trash-bin rules. He argues that residents are being ticketed despite difficulty obtaining the required containers.

Felder, a Brooklyn Democrat, made this request in a letter to Sanitation Commissioner Gregory Anderson. The council member said residents have reported that required bins are being stolen from their properties and resold at inflated prices.

The city's new bin requirements are part of an effort to improve trash collection and reduce problems associated with loose garbage bags on city streets. DSNY began full enforcement of the rules on September 8th, after previously delaying enforcement due to concerns about supply shortages.

Felder has been critical of the city's decision to designate Home Depot as the sole authorized retailer of the required NYC Bin. He says limiting sales to one retailer has made it difficult for some residents to obtain the containers and contributed to a secondary market.
