NYC Council Secures AI Firms' Testimony After Subpoena Threats

New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin has managed to secure commitments from major tech firms OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic to testify at an upcoming hearing on AI safety.

The companies were initially reluctant to attend, but after receiving letters threatening the use of subpoena power, they agreed to send representatives to the council-wide hearing on October 5th.

This is a significant development as it will be the first time major AI firms provide public testimony under oath about the risks and potential safeguards of their technology.

The hearing comes amidst growing concerns over the rapid advancement of AI, with reports citing tens of thousands of safety incidents in recent days. The City Council has introduced a slate of bills to address these issues, including requiring human override 'kill switches' for AI agents and cash rewards for whistleblowers of bad actors.

Metal was already committed to attending the hearing before receiving the threatening letters, but Elon Musk's SpaceXAI was invited and did not respond. The council has subsequently issued a subpoena legally requiring their attendance.
