Ohio Data Center Project Booms with OpenAI and Nvidia Partnership
A massive data center project is underway in Ohio, spearheaded by OpenAI and Nvidia. The PORTS-Pike Technology Data Center will be one of the largest AI-powered facilities in the United States, providing at least 8 gigawatts of electrical power. This is a significant development, as it surpasses the nation's largest nuclear power plant and the largest operating U.S. data center by power capacity.
The project has a 20-year lease agreement with SB Energy and SoftBank Group, backed by Nvidia's $105 billion financial guarantee. The data center is expected to create 35,000 construction jobs through 2032 and 2,500 long-term operating positions. By 2028, the facility will generate 800 megawatts of power before construction is complete.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said that 'now is the time to scale the AI infrastructure that will power the next industrial revolution.' The data center's backers are cooperating with the Department of Energy on leveraging the site's existing water system, which uses closed-loop, air-cooled systems to recirculate water rather than cooling towers.
