Okinawa Flight Evacuated After Engine Shut Down
An All Nippon Airways Boeing 737-800 was evacuated on the runway at Okinawa's airport after the crew shut down an engine due to vibrations and high oil temperatures during a flight to Saga.
The aircraft, registered JA86AN, had departed from Okinawa just after midday local time with 158 people on board. The crew noticed vibrations in the right engine, a CFM International CFM56, as they climbed away from the airport.
After shutting down the affected engine and turning back towards Okinawa, the pilots safely landed the aircraft on runway 36R about an hour after departure. Passengers were then evacuated via emergency slides, with three receiving minor injuries described as scrapes.
The Japan Transport Safety Board has opened an investigation into the incident, classifying it as a serious incident and examining the crew's decision-making and the condition of the engine.
