Old Low-Value Pages Can Still Affect Site Recovery
Google Search Advocate John Mueller recently shared that even after changes are made to a website, its systems may still assess the site's value based on older, low-quality pages. This is according to a Bluesky reply he provided in response to someone describing a site that generated pages from combinations of domain names, technologies, and attributes.
Mueller emphasized that programmatic SEO like this often leads to sites being perceived as spam or low quality by Google's systems. He explained that the older pages on the site might still be influencing how Google views it today, possibly due to the site's history of generating many pages with limited value to users.
Mueller noted that resolving this issue requires significant effort and time to show the value of the site. He suggested comparing the process to resolving issues related to spam and core updates, which can take 'sometimes many months.'
