Oliver Takes Aim at UnitedHealth Group Over Algorithmic Claims Denials
John Oliver returned to 'Last Week Tonight' after a month off the air and took aim at UnitedHealth Group, the parent company of UnitedHealthcare. The segment focused on how United handles insurance claims and criticized the company's algorithm-driven approach to coverage denials.
Oliver pointed out that 69% of respondents in a poll taken after the shooting blamed insurance companies' coverage denials at least in part for the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The company brought in $447 billion in 2025, making it one of the largest U.S. companies by revenue.
Oliver highlighted several cases where customers faced difficulties with claims, including a disabled girl named Emmy who had to wait hours on the phone before her bathing chair was approved. He also mentioned Cole Schmidtknecht, a 22-year-old from Wisconsin who died after his asthma medication was dropped from coverage.
Oliver called for single-payer healthcare and pointed out that companies like UnitedHealth Group are 'pointless time-wasting middlemen' or 'ruthless arbiters of who lives and who dies.'
