Open-Source App 2FAS Replaces Google, Microsoft, and Authy for Jack

Jack, a contributing author at MakeUseOf since June 2024, has abandoned Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, and Authy in favor of an open-source app called 2FAS. He found these popular authenticator apps to be restrictive, forcing users into proprietary ecosystems and making it difficult to switch between devices.

The simplicity of Google Authenticator was not enough for Jack, who felt that his codes never truly belonged to him. Microsoft Authenticator required investment in the company's ecosystem, while Authy's desktop version was discontinued on Mac.

2FAS, on the other hand, offers complete control and transparency, as it is open-source. The app doesn't require an account and stores tokens locally on the device, with cloud backup available for those who want it. Jack appreciates that 2FAS allows users to keep everything offline or enable backups as needed.

Migrating between devices with 2FAS is surprisingly easy, thanks to its ability to import tokens from other apps and create encrypted backups. The browser extension also enables secure code sharing between devices, making logging into websites faster.
