OpenAI and Microsoft Execs Admit AI Tools Substitute News Articles
A court document has revealed that OpenAI and Microsoft executives acknowledged their AI tools are substitutes for news articles published by outlets like the New York Times.
In a unsealed motion, it's stated that Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella testified conversations with chatbots have 'substituted' for publisher sites, while OpenAI senior executive Nick Turley wrote '[o]ur products are largely substitutive, period.'
The news publishers filed their lawsuits accusing the companies of illegally using news articles to train AI. The Trump administration urged the court to rule that training AI on copyrighted works constitutes fair use.
According to Microsoft's data, there was an 83-93% drop in click-through rates for Times' and Daily News' content, and 51-94% for Ziff Davis' domains.
