OpenAI and Microsoft Face Copyright Lawsuit from US Publishers
Two major US news organizations, The Seattle Times and Newsday, have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft over alleged copyright infringement. The companies are accused of using the publications' journalism to train artificial intelligence systems without permission.
The news organizations claim that AI tools can reproduce or closely rewrite their work, potentially reducing the need for readers to visit their websites or pay for subscriptions. They argue that this use of their content is a form of copyright infringement and are seeking compensation for it.
OpenAI has responded by stating that its AI models are trained using publicly available information and are based on fair use. Microsoft also acknowledged the importance of local news organizations, saying they were surprised by the lawsuit but willing to explore solutions.
The case is part of a growing list of copyright disputes involving AI companies and content creators. The New York Times previously filed a similar lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft in 2023, which remains ongoing.
