OpenAI Breaks Free from Microsoft, Expands AWS Partnership
OpenAI has revamped its partnership with Microsoft, giving it more freedom to expand services with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud. The change allows OpenAI to sell its AI models across multiple cloud providers, ending its exclusive partnership with Microsoft.
The revised agreement keeps Azure as OpenAI's primary cloud partner through 2032, but new products will continue to launch first on Azure unless Microsoft chooses not to support them. This simplifies the bridge between high-end creative AI and massive customer datasets that exist in AWS, moving AI from a tool developers 'play' with to a deeply integrated part of the ad-tech stack.
MICROSOFT WILL NO LONGER PAY A REVENUE SHARE TO OPENAI, which traded steady income for independence. This means OpenAI can eventually keep all its profits and sell its models on AWS and Google Cloud without Microsoft's permission. Previously, each time Microsoft sold OpenAI’s technology to an Azure customer, it gave revenue share to OpenAI.
