OpenAI Brings ChatGPT Integration to Microsoft Word
OpenAI has introduced its ChatGPT technology into Microsoft Word, allowing users to draft, edit, and format documents without leaving the application. The integration became available on September 17, 2026, across all ChatGPT plans, including the free tier.
The feature runs through a sidebar inside Microsoft Word and can be accessed by installing the ChatGPT add-in through Microsoft Marketplace. Users need to sign in with their ChatGPT account, and those using an organisation's workspace can select the relevant workspace after signing in.
With ChatGPT for Word, users can ask questions about their document, revise selected text, turn notes and source material into a first draft, and more. The technology supports skills for repeatable document tasks and connected apps that bring information from services such as Outlook, SharePoint, Google Workspace, and Dropbox.
However, OpenAI has listed some limitations to the integration, including complex formatting, tables, and charts may still require manual changes.
