OpenAI's Massive Cash Reserve Challenges Nvidia's Premium Pricing
OpenAI's CFO Sarah Friar recently explained why Nvidia is no longer the only option for chip suppliers. She described her company's strategy as diversifying its supply chain to mitigate risk, which implies that OpenAI now treats Nvidia as just one qualified supplier among several.
Friar drew a clear line between two workloads: training and inference. Training happens episodically and rewards general-purpose silicon, but inference runs on every user prompt afterward and is more efficient with purpose-built chips.
OpenAI's massive $122 billion cash reserve removes the urgency and dependency that suppliers normally use to hold pricing. This gives OpenAI the leverage to wait for better terms or even go through an IPO without locking in supply at any price.
