OpenAI's Stealthy $1 Billion Advertising Machine Threatens Traditional Ad Revenue Models
OpenAI has been secretly building an advertising machine that could potentially disrupt traditional ad revenue models. The company recently announced that its ChatGPT Ads platform reached a $1 billion annualized run rate in just over six months, with tens of thousands of advertisers already using the system.
This achievement is notable, considering that OpenAI spent years insisting that advertising was not central to its business model. Now, the company is redefining what it means to monetize commercial intent by allowing AI agents to qualify customers before they click on an ad.
One of the key features of ChatGPT Ads is the ability for users to start a conversation with a clearly labeled AI representative of the brand. This 'Sponsored Agent' can answer questions, explain differences, and help the user decide before eventually sending them to the advertiser when they are ready to act.
Amazon has already validated OpenAI's thesis by opening ChatGPT Ads to brands using Amazon Ads, allowing both parties to benefit from the arrangement. OpenAI gets paid for the intent generated inside ChatGPT, while Amazon preserves its advertising economics and remains the destination for the purchase.
