OT Cybersecurity Visibility Lacking in Industrial Organizations, Honeywell Report Finds

Honeywell's inaugural OT Cybersecurity Benchmark Report reveals concerning gaps in operational technology (OT) cybersecurity visibility among industrial organizations. The survey of 603 cybersecurity and operational leaders across critical infrastructure sectors found that while 92% of respondents perceive themselves as top-tier recovery ready, only 31% claim to be fully prepared.

Paul Smith, Honeywell's global portfolio director for cybersecurity, noted a notable gap between how organizations perceive their cybersecurity resilience and actual capabilities. He emphasized the need for operational preparedness across critical infrastructure, citing that 91% of energy and utilities respondents reported experiencing significant OT cybersecurity incidents in the past year.

The report highlights the expanding scope of OT security beyond traditional operations. It found that modern operational environments increasingly include HVAC systems, building management systems, badge readers, video surveillance systems, fire panels, elevators, and connected IoT devices interacting directly with physical operations and worker safety.
