Outlook's New Pre-Send Typos Check: A Last Chance to Catch Embarrassing Errors
Microsoft is rolling out a new feature in Outlook that will give users one last chance to catch typos before sending an email. This pre-send typo check will review the message for spelling mistakes and provide a warning to the sender, who can then edit the draft before hitting send.
The feature aims to address a common issue where users accidentally send emails with embarrassing typos to their colleagues or managers. While it's not meant to replace careful editing, it will serve as an additional layer of review for users who may have missed spelling mistakes during composition.
Outlook already supports spelling and grammar checks through Microsoft Editor, but this new feature adds another point of review before sending the email. It's designed to be useful for short messages where writers often skip a full review, and it will work across various devices, including Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android.
Microsoft has emphasized that users need control over the review process, so Outlook should show the problem in context and let the sender accept or ignore the suggestion. The tool also needs to avoid interrupting messages with names, product terms, code, URLs, or industry language, as this could slow down routine messages.
The new feature will be released in stages across different versions of Microsoft 365, Outlook on the web, desktop apps, and mobile apps. Users can check the Microsoft 365 roadmap for rollout information and the Outlook support page for product guidance.
